Hanging Cage Light

I went to a fundraising event the other evening and I won this hanging miners lamp from the silent auction! I was happy to win this and contribute money to the cause, however when I got home, I was wondering what I was going to do with it. Yes, I'm one of those people who usually plans any home purchases and would have figured it all out beforehand!
So I did some research and I am using this Melbourne house as an inspiration. I like the cool relaxed way the lights are installed. So I intend to install a hook in my house and hang it like this. Now I just to figure out where...

Studio Ilse and The Apartment, Copenhagen

Studio Ilse's residency at The Apartment, Copenhagen

Here is an interesting concept that is looking really good - Studio Ilse, the London based design firm founded by Ilse Crawford, (a designer much admired by myself) has taken up a two month residency at a Copenhagen design gallery called The Apartment.
Set up as a private home rather than a formal exhibition, this is very similar to the Artek/Vitra exhibition presented earlier this year by Studio Ilse, whereas this time the design firm will actually inhabit these spaces until later this year.
"The intention was to bring the apartment to life as a home, not as a gallery" Crawford explains, and she wanted the visitors feel that they could inhabit the spaces themselves. There are furniture designs being released, lectures as well as kitchen suppers to be hosted, which can only add richness and layers to these spaces. This supports Crawford's theory that good design supports human life and behaviour. Love it. Read more about it here and here.

Mid Century and Modern Design Auction in Wellington

Ray and Charles Eames for Vitra Aluminium lounge chair

Wellingtonians (and yes, the rest of you), here is a great up-coming auction that is worth taking note of.
Auction house, Dunbar Sloane and leading New Zealand supplier of European mid-century furniture, Karakter have joined forces to hold Wellington's first ever auction that focusses solely on mid-century and modern design. There are some quality original pieces available and the designers range from Ray and Charles Eames, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe through to Hans J Wegner and Poul Henningsen. I took the liberty to have a browse through and pulled the ones that are featured here - however, there is a wide and varied range to suit all fans of mid-century and modern design.
Viewing of these classic pieces start from Friday 5th September at Dunbar Sloane Wellington and the auction will take place on Tuesday 9th September at 6pm. Find out more about the auction and the pieces that will be available here.

Pink sofa

There has not been many opportunities in my design career that a hot pink sofa would be required. Until now that is...
Working on an office fit-out, it was several months ago my clients mentioned that they considered their brand colour to be hot pink - well, that just asked for some form of furniture in hot pink in the reception area, didn't it? First it was going to be chairs, then we took the plunge and did this sofa instead. Fabulous.

Work in Progress

I went onsite today and it was great to see this kitchen I designed earlier this year almost completed. The T & G and panelled cabinetry is looking great in the this soft grey green and it works beautifully with the warm recycled timber bench tops.

Stylish Sydney House in Urbis Magazine

It has been quiet here at CMID over the last week or so as I have had a forced break due to getting my appendix removed! On reflection it has been great (for me, not so for my clients) to have some down time and I am recuperating well.
I am back in the office next week - however, I wanted to get back on the blog as the latest issue of Urbis magazine is out today and I have the pleasure of sharing this cool Sydney home designed by Carter Williamson Architects. Featured in the latest issue, this former worker cottage has been updated for modern living while making a nod to its historical roots as demonstrated through its single level cottage-style street façade and the rich material palette of brick, galvanised metal sheeting, timber and tiles. I love the consistent use of the grass green glass tile throughout the house - it contrasts beautifully against the earthy palette of materials. Get the latest issue to see more of this feature by Elana Castle as well as the rest of the magazine. Enjoy.
