West London Family Home

As the arrival of the new CMID blog draws near, we pause to reflect on designers that are of particular appeal one way or another.   We are drawn to the residential works of the Charles Mellersh Design Studio for its enduring commitment to simplicity without draining rooms of warmth and comfort.  This is evident in an older post looking at previous Charles Mellersh work - see here  - as it is with this more recent West London effort, as seen above and below.  Though each interior is site specific and styled in different ways, both are undeniably warm and layered with eye-catching visuals that do not burden the limited space.  It's a good balancing act and effective interior design can often be reduced to finding balance.

Interesting sidebar:  Charles Mellersh started his design career as a journalist and stylist, including a stint as an interiors editor with the influential magazine, Wallpaper*.  This would have provided ample opportunity to hone his style and, perhaps, approach his own design work with a practiced critical eye for what works for the broader  readership/audience.  And indeed, the rooms below have a certain unifying appeal to them that could cut across various demographics: male/female, family home/professional couple without kids etc.  It's both versatile and smart politics!

Apartments in a Former Chocolate Factory

After admiring the Lyceum apartments by Stockholm property development company, Oscar Properties last week, I delved further into their portfolio and found these lovely apartments located in a former chocolate factory. Again, the historical character building, typical of factory buildings in the 1920's in Stockholm, have high ceilings and large mullioned windows which are so desirable in a living space. And to top it off, these spaces are well designed, have a beautiful palette of materials and styled with sophisticated pieces. Tick, tick, tick - all the right boxes.

Interior Inspiration - Scandinavian Style

Let's start off the week with this great interior inspiration in Scandinavian style from Inside Out magazine. "This home utilises clean lines, rich tones and texture to create a sense of warmth in a white space". Lovely.

House Boat

Check out the stunning interiors on this house boat - yes, house boat! Spotted on Est, this three level, four bedroom, two bathroom and two galley kitchen house boat was custom-fit by Melbourne design duo, Pipkorn & Kilpatrick. The design team, Jane Kilpatrick and Anna Pipkorn (who had formed their design firm after working together at previous design companies and this project was their first design commission) worked hard to create 'generous' spaces, something that boats often lack. The results are stunning. The interiors are clean, innovative and timeless, and for the multi-generation family that use this boat for their holidays, these interiors will not date. Read more about the project from a Vogue Living article here.
